A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF THE MOVIE RISING PHOENIX: THE STORY OF THE PARALYMPIC GAMES

The increasing significance of Paralympic sports necessitates reading it from different perspectives within its own history. Based on this requirement, the designed study aimed to qualitatively analyze the movie whose original name was "Rising Phoenix" and its translated name was " Rising Phoenix: The Story of the Paralympic Games". Revealing how, in the scenes shown throughout the film, the Paralympic Games embody passion, fear, hope, joy, and sadness, the confusion between right and wrong, the known and the unknown, and clarifying the meaning explicitly produced for the Paralympic Games shed light on this study's other aims. The research followed the semiotic analysis method, a qualitative research design, and used narrative and discourse analysis to analyze the data. The study examined connotation-denotation, signifier-signified-sign, syntax, system dimensions, and oppositions. In conclusion, the film's thematic opposition elements center around insights into trauma and well-being, loss and discovery, light and darkness, death and rebirth, introversion and extroversion, risk and opportunity, vulnerability and resilience, limitations and possibilities, defeat and triumph, as well as the dynamics of power between managers and subordinates. Furthermore, the film explores cultural indicators related to para-sports performance and seamlessly weaving a narrative that intricately delves into the complexities of paralympic identities, roles, and social interactions. Ultimately, the film boldly invites viewers to consider how social discourses and interactions are constructed and shaped in the context of paralympic sports. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-1939-0526
