RELATIONSHIP OF ANKLE SPRAINS AND IN-SEASON PLAYER STATISTICS IN THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (NBA): A 10- YEAR OVERVIEW

The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between reported ankle injuries and player statistics during the 10 seasons between 2013 and 2023 in the National Basketball Association (NBA). For the study, occurred ankle injuries and player statistics between the NBA 2013-14 and the 2022-2023 regulars season were obtained. A total of 1397 players of 300 teams, who played in a total of 800 matches during this period were examined. Injury data and player statistics were collected through publicly available records from the NBA's official website and prosportstransactions.com’s database. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software version 26.0 (IBM Corp). During the time period examined, a total of 676 ankle injuries were identified. The number of players suffering an ankle injury during the time period examined was 386 (27.6%). Among those who had an ankle injury, 228 players had it once (59.1%), 89 players had it twice (23.1%), 41 players had it 3 times (10.6%), 21 players had it 4 times (5.4%), 3 players had it 5 times (0.8%), 2 players had it 5 times, 1 player had it 6 times (0.5%), 1 player had it 7 times (0.3%) and 1 player had it 9 times (0.3%). While there was no significant difference between the playing positions of the injured players compared to those who did not (p=0.749), the injured players had significantly played higher minutes per game (p<0.001), had a higher number of drives (p<0.001) and made a higher number of blocks (p <0.001). A relationship was detected between player performance statistics and injuries during basketball-related movements such as changing direction and landing movements, which were the most common injuries experienced by high-level basketball players who suffered ankle sprains during the examined time period. These results support the recommendation that players' playing style habits and characteristics should be taken into account when determining prevention approaches for ankle sprain injuries.
